How to sleep with curly hair

Every morning you google: “How do I sleep with curly hair?” Because as a curlygirl, you know it’s a struggle to keep your hair beautiful.

Sleeping in the wrong position can mean waking up with frizzy hair, knots and tangles, but sometimes you just don't want to lie on your side or stomach all night.

How to keep your curls beautiful overnight?

Luckily, this article has all the answers on how to sleep with naturally curly hair without ruining it or your sleep! Read all the tips on how to keep your curls at night, regardless of your hair length.

How to sleep with wet curly hair

One of the best tips for curls is to let it air dry or using a diffuser if you don't have time for that. If you are in the habit of showering before going to bed, this can be a tricky step to follow. So follow these steps to prevent breakage and frizzy hair:

  • Shower about 2 hours before you go to bed and make sure your hair is completely dry.
  • Use a leave-in conditioner and gel to style your hair.
  • Put your hair in Sleeping Cap or use the pineapple method (more on this in the next section).

How to sleep with curly hair: pineapple method

it has been known for years that the pineapple method is a great way to sleep with curls. A loose bun or loose ponytail on top of your head keeps everything out of the way, keeping your curls intact while you toss and turn.

  • Bend your head forward and gather the curls on top of your head, to put your hair in a pineapple.
  • Then wrap your curls once or twice with a silk scrunchie and pull the hair into a sort of bun. Make sure the scrunchie stays a little loose, that way you avoid pulling your hair.
  • In the morning, remove your scrunchie carefully and shake your curls loose

How to sleep with short curly hair

If you have short hair, it may not be possible to follow the pineapple method. But fortunately, there are a few other techniques that work for this hair length and we will explore them here:

  • Use the same technique as the pineapple method, but divide your hair into four small sections and twist them into separate loose buns.
  • Use a sleeping cap to cover your entire hair while you sleep (more on this later).

How to sleep with long curly hair

While sleeping, curls are easily flattened. And that means for curlygirls with long hair, the question of how to keep defined curls at night becomes even more important. Fortunately, there are a number of styles that help protect your natural curl pattern:

  • With the two-strand twist, you take sections of hair, divide them in half and wrap the sections around each other before tying.
  • The multi-pineapple uses the same method as mentioned earlier, but with smaller sections.
  • The Sleeping Cap is specially designed for curly hair.

Which pillow to use?

Another important tip for curls is to invest in the right pillowcase. A silk or satin pillowcase can reduce frizz and tangles. But also helps your hair stay hydrated and retain your hair's natural oils while you sleep. This is especially important for curly hair that dries out easier than other hair types.

Traditional pillowcases with rough cotton fibers can cause friction with your hair, while silk and satin pillows allow your hair to slide easily across the pillow. This means fewer tangles, less damage and easier styling when you wake up.

The solution: sleeping with a sleeping cap

If you don't want to replace those comfy pillows you love so much, you can simply cover your hair with the sleeping cap. Just like silk and satin pillowcases, your curls will be optimally protected.

All your curls will fit perfectly in the sleeping cap by Curlygirlmovement and made of a lovely soft fabric. After you drift off to sleep, you will wake up again with locks that barely need styling.
